Abbey College Debating Society

Formed and led by senior tutor Elizabeth Sweeney the Abbey College debating society has been in full swing this year with debates on a wide range of controversial topics.  In the words of Elizabeth:

"Debating is one of the most rewarding activities you will ever be involved in.  Not only will it help you develop confidence in public speaking, but it will also help you to think on your feet.  You will learn how to think creatively and independently and how to improve your research skills.  You will become an expert on how to keep an audience's attention, how to group your arguments and structure your speech. Debating is fun and exciting - have a go!  Don't be afraid of making a fool of yourself."

Upcoming debates include,

This house believes:

  • …that advertisements do more harm than good.
  • …that cheerleaders should be banned from professional sporting events.
  • …that bank bonuses should be banned
