Admissions and Student Services

When applying for a place at Abbey College, please take the following into consideration.

UK Students who wish to apply to Abbey College should attend for an admissions interview with either the Academic Principal or Principal. Parents are encouraged to attend the interview with their son or daughter. The admissions interview is an informal process that seeks to identify the interests and motivation of a student and enables the provision of detailed, expert advice to ensure that she or he will benefit from attending Abbey College.

Admission interviews are held throughout the year and can be arranged by telephoning the College (0207 824 7300) or via email to adminlon@abbeylondon.co.uk

Overseas students currently studying in the UK should attend for an admissions interview with the College's Director of International Admissions. Students who live outside the UK can arrange an admissions interview with one of the College's authorised overseas representatives via the College's Director of International Admissions who can be contacted via email (adminlon@abbeylondon.co.uk) or telephone (+44 (0) 207 824 7300).

Joining Lower Sixth

Students must be a minimum of 15 years old before they start at Abbey College in either September (for a two-year A-level programme or three-year Pre-sessional English plus A-levels programme) or January (for an eighteen-month A-level programme or two and a half year Pre-sessional English plus A-levels programme).

The College does not set an entrance examination and welcomes applications from students currently studying in either the state or independent sector; in the UK or overseas.

UK students or overseas students who have studied IGCSE joining the two-year or eighteen-month programme to study one or all of biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics at A-level must have an absolute minimum of grade C at GCSE for these subjects (CC where students have studied GCSE Science with GCSE Additional Science). Students wishing to study A-level Further Mathematics must have a minimum of grade A for GCSE Mathematics. Students wishing to study psychology, business studies, economics, accounting or government and politics are assumed to have no prior knowledge of the subjects they are studying and GCSE qualifications in these subjects are not required for admission to these subjects.

Non UK students with overseas qualifications other than IGCSE and for whom English is an Additional Language, must be in possession of a minimum of IELTS (Academic) 5.0 to start A-levels at the College. Non UK students should contact the College for advice concerning the level of their qualifications and their acceptability for the purposes of admission to the College.

Joining Upper Sixth (One Year Programme)

Approximately 20% of our students join us at the start of Upper Sixth. They may have become disenchanted with their schools, or have been studying A Level subjects which they now regret taking. Others will have done less well in their AS exams than expected and it is felt that an intensive year preparing for A2 whilst retaking AS units is needed to ensure the best possible A Level results.

Some of these students will be recommended to follow a one year intensive A Level course if they have not satisfactorily mastered the content of the AS syllabus. Others will continue at A2 level in the normal way, and can retake AS modules if marks were disappointing. Where students have studied a syllabus on a different examining board, permission is usually granted by the receiving examining board to allow the AS result to be transferred to the A2 exam board.

The new system is much more flexible for students moving schools in the middle of the Sixth Form than previously. In sum, it is better for students to transfer at the beginning of Upper Sixth than to risk disappointing A Level grades a year later, and then be faced with re-takes.
