| One Year A-level
The College offers the following subjects as one year A-levels:
Biology (Edexcel)
Chemistry (Edexcel)
Physics (Edexcel)
Mathematics (Edexcel)
Psychology (AQA)
Approximately thirty students enrol at the College each summer having completed AS-levels or A-levels at another school or college. Such students follow a one-year programme seeking to improve upon existing A-level or AS-level grades, predominantly for subjects such as biology, chemistry and mathematics although the College does also offer one year courses physics and psychology.
The vast majority of the students who enrol in the summer are aiming for medicine and dentistry with others who are aiming for courses such as pharmacy and optometry. The College has an excellent record in improving the grades of such students and assisting them in securing a place on what are the most competitive degree courses.
This success is achieved through a focus on examination success, small class sizes, a substantial allocation of hours per subject per week, excellent teachers and continual and effective support regarding university applications.
In addition to offering one-year retake courses, the College offers students the opportunity to study a new subject over one year where doing so is suitable to their university aspirations and their ability. In recent years, a number of students have, for example studied psychology as a new one year subject in order to either replace a previously taken very weak subject or to add breadth to their A-level portfolio.
January Start A-level
The College offers the following subjects as January start, five-term A-levels:
Biology (Edexcel)
Chemistry (Edexcel)
Physics (Edexcel)
Mathematics (Edexcel)
Mathematics with Further Mathematics (Edexcel)
Economics (OCR)
Students who join the college in January of each year do so from schools overseas and from schools in the UK where they have made a hesitant start to their A-levels during the preceding autumn term and wish to make a fresh start at a new college. Other students staring in January wish to change their subjects completely and do not want to wait until the start of a new academic year to do so. One Term A-level The College offers the following subjects as One Term A-levels:
Biology (Edexcel)
Chemistry (Edexcel, AQA, OCR)
Physics (Edexcel)
Mathematics (Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI, AQA)
Short retake courses may be taken between September and January. These courses are designed for students who narrowly missed their grades at the first attempt. Such courses are very demanding and require a very determined approach. Where necessary, a one-term retake can be combined with a one-year retake course in a different subject.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) For overseas students attending the College who do not yet have a formal English language qualification (a requirement of entry to a UK university) the College offers an IELTS (Academic) programme that is taught alongside a student's A-level programme. Students for whom English is a second language who achieve a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 at the end of their first year at the College have the option to end their studies of IELTS English at this point. However, most EAP students at the College are aiming for universities such as the London School of Economics, Imperial College, UCL, Oxford, Cambridge and universities such as those listed generally require students to achieve IELTS 7.0/7.5 for many degree programmes. Consequently, some students continue with their IELTS programme for the first term of their second year at the College to achieve the standard required by such universities. |

Open Mind
The College's ‘Open Mind' course is available to all of the College's full-time students and seeks to develop a student's critical thinking skills. The demonstration of such skills either at interview or within written examinations such as UKCAT, BMAT and LNAT, is increasingly becoming a pre-requisite to a student receiving offers from the UK 's top universities. Drawing upon a wealth of knowledge, experience and commitment to intellectual rigour from amongst the entire College staff, the Open Mind programme aims to be both challenging and thought provoking.
Advanced Extension Awards (AEAs)
The College offers AEAs for biology, chemistry, economics, mathematics and physics to two-year A-level students. Based on A Level criteria, AEAs are extra exams taken on top of A-levels and are designed for students already expecting to get a grade A in the corresponding A Level. AEAs expect you to show a greater depth of understanding of your subject and they also test your logical and critical skills more than A Levels on their own.
Olympiads
Our students are regularly entered for and perform very well in the UK Mathematics Olympiad competition and the UK Biology Olympiad Competition. |
